Navigating UC&C complexity: insights into IT workload challenges

In today's digital age, IT plays a crucial role in the success of any organization. IT teams are responsible for managing and maintaining various critical systems, ensuring seamless communication, and providing technical support to keep the wheels of your organization turning.

However, the ever-increasing workload and complexity of unified communications and collaboration (UC&C) pose significant challenges to IT practitioners, affecting their productivity and efficiency.

Shedding light on IT workload increases

IR’s report, The IT Time Crunch, sheds light on the difficulties encountered by IT professionals in the ever-evolving world of UC&C. The research, based on a survey of over 200 IT practitioners globally, delves deeply into the effects of UC&C's fast-paced and ever-changing landscape on IT teams in today’s rapidly evolving work environment. Particularly as organizations across the globe continue to navigate the ever-changing nature of hybrid work.

According to the findings, more than half of the IT practitioners surveyed (52.2%) reported a surge in their workload of either ‘greatly increased’ or ‘somewhat increased’, owing to the persistent changes and intricacies of UC&C in recent years.

Does this example sound familiar?

A company decides to adopt a new UC&C platform, which promises to streamline communication and collaboration between employees. The IT team quickly realize the new system requires significant customization and integration with existing tools, leading to a surge in their workload.

Additionally, as the platform continues to evolve with new features and updates, the IT team are required to stay constantly up-to-date to ensure the smooth running of the new tool. It’s no wonder their workload has increased. As upgrades and modifications like this take place frequently in the UC&C domain, IT teams are facing tremendous pressure to keep up and ensure smooth functioning within their enterprise.

These changes, coupled with the responsibility of maintaining uninterrupted operations, have had a considerable effect on IT practitioners, with respondents ranking the impact 6 out of 10 across the board.

Importance of monitoring tools

The abundance of communication channels and devices poses several challenges for IT teams exacerbating the workload increases, including network congestion, performance issues, security threats, and data management.

In the absence of monitoring systems, IT teams are unable to gain visibility or exert control over their organization's UC&C environment, greatly impacting their ability to diagnose and resolve issues effectively. To reduce these challenges, organizations should invest in appropriate monitoring solutions to empower their IT teams with the means to effectively manage and monitor their UC&C environment.
