More Bandwidth Won't Fix Congestion You Can't See

Why bandwidth is the wrong first move

When the network feels slow, the reflex is to buy more bandwidth. Sometimes that helps. Often it doesn't, because the problem was never total capacity—it was a specific queue, at a specific hop, at a specific time, and adding a bigger pipe elsewhere does nothing for it.

Capacity is how much the network can carry. Congestion is traffic piling up at one point despite spare capacity everywhere else. You can be running at 30% capacity overall and still be dropping packets at the one link that matters.

More bandwidth is expensive, slow to provision, and blind to the real causes of congestion:

  • Micro-bursts that saturate a link for milliseconds and never show on a five-minute average
  • Quality of Service (QoS) misconfiguration sending priority traffic into the wrong queue
  • A single asymmetric path carrying more than its share
  • One access-layer uplink at one site quietly maxing out

None of these are fixed by upgrading a different link. All of them are invisible on utilisation graphs averaged over minutes.

Once you can see where traffic actually piles up, the fix is frequently a QoS change or a routing correction, not a purchase order.
