A report lands on Monday showing three fraudulent transactions from the weekend. Every one already cleared. The monitoring worked, in the sense that it found them, but it found them in a report, after the money moved, which is the one moment when finding them helps the least.
Detection tells you fraud happened. Interdiction stops it while it's happening. The distance between the two is measured in the time it takes your monitoring to see a transaction, and if that time is longer than settlement, you're running a reporting system, not a prevention one.
Why after-the-fact is a different job
Post-settlement fraud detection is valuable for investigation and recovery, but it can't do the thing that matters most:
- The money has already left, so recovery is now a legal and operational cost
- The customer has already been harmed, and will remember who let it through
- The pattern has already worked, so it will be tried again before you finish the report
- Regulators increasingly expect prevention, not just prompt reporting
Move the decision earlier
| After settlement | Before settlement |
|---|---|
| Detect and report | Detect and stop |
| Recover what you can | Nothing to recover |
| Explain to the customer | Nothing to explain |
| Batch, hours later | Streaming, sub-second |
The shift is from analysing transactions after they complete to scoring them in the flow, in the window between authorisation and settlement, while a decision can still change the outcome.

How IR Transact can help
IR Transact, powered by Prognosis, gives you visibility into the payment flow as it happens, so a high-risk transaction surfaces while it's still in flight rather than in Monday's report. Correlating activity across the payment path in real time turns monitoring from a record of what went wrong into a chance to stop it, inside the window where stopping is still possible.
