Your Cisco Dashboard Is Green. So Why Is Collaboration Still Failing?

Every switch, router, and Cisco node on the map is green. The Network Operations Centre (NOC) is quiet. And the collaboration team is still fielding complaints about calls that stutter and meetings that won't join.

Both things are true at once. And that's the whole problem.

Device health tells you the box is running. Service health tells you the thing the box exists to deliver is working. A network can be perfectly up and still be delivering an unacceptable call.

Why infrastructure monitoring isn't enough

Traditional network monitoring watches infrastructure: is the interface up, is CPU under threshold, is the link passing traffic. All necessary. None of it sufficient for real-time media, which fails in ways a device-up check never registers:

  • Micro-bursts of congestion too short to trip a utilisation alarm but long enough to drop packets
  • Quality of Service (QoS) misclassification sending voice into a best-effort queue
  • Asymmetric routing that adds latency on the return path only
  • A healthy core with one saturated access-layer uplink at one site

Most teams monitor what's easy to see. Better teams monitor what matters.

You're probably watching:

  • Interface up/down
  • CPU and memory
  • Link utilisation
  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) traps

You should also watch:

  • Call setup success rate
  • Jitter, latency, packet loss per call
  • Mean Opinion Score (MOS) by site and by segment
  • The path a failed call actually took

Service-aware monitoring doesn't replace your Cisco tooling. It answers the question that tooling can't: given everything is up, why is the experience still bad?
